Vastupal & Tejpal — The Brothers Who Built Dilwara
Two Gujarati ministers commission the Luna Vasahi at Mount Abu, leaving Jain India one of its greatest marble miracles.

In the 13th century, Vastupal and Tejpal were ministers of the Vaghela kings of Dholka in Gujarat. The brothers were celebrated as much for their generosity as for their statecraft — they sponsored libraries, fed pilgrims on the road to Shatrunjaya, restored ancient shrines, and rescued copies of Jain scripture lost during invasions.
Their greatest gift, however, was made in memory of Tejpal's deceased son Luniga. The brothers commissioned the second great temple at Mount Abu — Luna Vasahi, dedicated to Bhagwan Neminath, the twenty-second Tirthankar.
Over fourteen years, more than twelve hundred marble artisans worked on the temple. The central dome alone took five years to carve — its lotus pendant so fine that visitors today still pause beneath it in disbelief. Around the courtyard, the Hathishala (elephant hall) holds carvings of the brothers and their wives mounted on stone elephants, eternally riding to the temple.
Vastupal and Tejpal showed an India of the Middle Ages something it badly needed to see: that wealth used in dharma is the only wealth that survives the centuries.
