The Spider Who Spun With Care

Even tiny lives shape the world when they work with patience.

In the corner of an old temple lived a little spider named Chinti. Every morning the monks swept the temple, and every morning Chinti's web came down. But Chinti never grew angry. "The monks need a clean temple to pray in," she said. "I will simply spin again." One day a storm shook the temple and broke a clay pot of grain that the monks needed for the village. While they worried, Chinti silently wove her finest web across the spilled grain — quick spider-silk that held it together until the monks could scoop it up. The senior monk smiled and asked, "Who patched my pot?" The youngest monk pointed to the corner. From that day on, the monks swept gently — leaving Chinti's web in peace.
