The King and the Tiny Bird

A mighty king learns that even the smallest life is worth protecting.

King Megharath sat on his golden throne when a tiny dove flew into his lap, trembling. Moments later a hungry hawk landed on his window. "That dove is my dinner, O King," cried the hawk. "I have not eaten in three days." The king was in a difficult place. If he saved the dove, the hawk would starve. If he gave the dove away, an innocent life would end. So the king made a kind promise. "I will give you flesh equal in weight to the dove from my own arm," he said. A scale was brought. The dove was placed on one side, and the king cut his own flesh and placed it on the other. But strangely, the dove's side stayed heavier. He added more, and more — until at last the king himself sat on the scale to match the bird. The hawk and dove smiled. They were not really birds at all — they were heavenly beings testing the king's compassion. They blessed him: "Your kindness is greater than any kingdom."
