The Honest Fruit Seller

A young girl's honesty earns her more than any clever trick could.

Manju sold mangoes by the village well. One afternoon a rich merchant bought a whole basket and rode away. Manju counted the coins he had paid and found one extra gold piece — a small fortune for her family. Her friends shouted, "Keep it! He'll never know." But Manju shook her head and ran after the merchant for two whole miles in the hot sun. When she returned the coin, the merchant looked at her for a long moment. "I have many gold pieces, child," he said gently. "But honesty like yours I have not found in years." He bought her mangoes every day after that, and told all his friends. By the end of the season, Manju had earned more from honesty than any clever shortcut could have given her.
