The Firefly and the Storm

A tiny firefly refuses to put out its light, no matter how loud the storm.

On a wet monsoon night, a storm rolled over the forest. The wind shrieked, the rain came in sheets, and the great trees bent low. In a clump of grass near the river, a single firefly kept flashing — small green-yellow blinks, one after another. A wise frog watching from a leaf called out: "Tiny one, save your light. The storm is too strong." The firefly only blinked again. "I do not light up to defeat the storm," it answered. "I light up because that is what I am. If even one creature, lost in the rain, sees me and finds its way to shelter — my light was not wasted." By morning the storm had passed. Beside the firefly, a tired moth slept safe under the leaf.
