The Elephant Who Bowed
A working elephant remembers a small kindness from a Jain monk and refuses to harm him in battle.

In a forest near Champapuri, a young Jain monk found an elephant calf wounded by a thorn. He sat with it through the night, pulled the thorn from its foot, and washed the cut with cool water. Then he walked on.
Years later, a king captured that elephant and trained it for war. When the king led an attack on a peaceful village, the elephant suddenly stopped at the edge of the forest. Standing in the path was the same monk, now older, walking with his alms-bowl. The elephant lowered its trunk and slowly knelt down. It would not move. The king tried whips, then tusks of fire — the great animal only knelt deeper.
The king understood. He climbed down, bowed to the monk, and turned his army home.
