The Deer Who Trusted

A frightened deer learns that quiet calm reaches further than fear.

Hara was a young deer who lived in fear. He ran from the wind, ran from shadows, ran from his own reflection in the stream. A wise old elephant watched him for many days. One morning the elephant blocked his path. "Little one, stop. Breathe. Look around you. Tell me what you see." Hara stood still for the first time in his life. He saw bright leaves. He heard birds. He felt the warm sun. The forest was beautiful — and he had been running through it without seeing. "Now," said the elephant, "when fear comes, breathe like this. Stand still for three breaths. Then decide if you must run." Hara tried it. He found that nine times out of ten, there was nothing to run from at all.
